Enough is enough! People who stutter (PWS) are tired of being the punchline
Stuttering is a disability that is still outwardly ridiculed.
Since the 1930s, fictional characters in entertainment have been given stuttering as a prop to make them appear silly or sinister. Porky Pig, Billy Madison, and even the villain in the one of the latest Star Wars movies have been reinforcing stereotypes that are simply untrue.
It’s not just in fiction, either. In the 2020 election, attributing life-long stuttering as an indicator of sudden mental decline became a shameless campaign tactic. From playgrounds to water coolers and memes on the internet—stuttering is the butt of the joke after joke.
Myths about stuttering are plentiful, but at the core they all do one thing: demote the value of PEOPLE who stutter. For this to end, we need to change the story line. And what we’re asking is that the world knows Stuttering Is No Joke.

The Campaign Continues
For decades, #StutteringIsNoJoke creators Josh Bodman and Gregg Benedikt have used their respective positions as activists, educators, and creative directors to debunk the myths of stuttering wherever there are stereotypes.
It is never okay to make fun of a person who stutters, no matter what day of the year it is. And while the #StutteringIsNoJoke campaign started on International Stuttering Awareness Day (10/22/20), we must continue to educate and remind those naive and/or rude people who still think it’s funny.
Please join us, and all People Who Stutter (PWS), to help make a difference and raise awareness. It’s time for the joke to end; for our voices to be regarded as equal to everyone else's. Follow the prompts on this site to add your post to our growing #StutteringIsNoJoke campaign.
